North Shore Hospital Building 5

A brief outline scope of the project was to bring the buildings structure up to code with some acceptable deviations, this involved the removal of all non-structural existing materials taking the building back to base structure then replacing all windows, light claddings, adding a lift and lift shaft and fitting out the project with an intensive services network for the hospital's outpatient requirements and new office and learning spaces also requiring extensive services. The new configuration required some structural elements to be removed which was achieved by logistically replacing previous concrete walls with high load beams while adding block infills and then cutting away existing structure and making way for new service penetrations throughout.

 

Due to the weak terracotta and concrete floor structure system, the project required a lot of design management and coordination to ensure proper structural fixings and loads were supported. (this included design managing an untested passive fire protection separating the floors).
