What We Do

Waitakere Hospital Maternity Ward Refurbishment

The Waitakere Maternity unit required an upgrade to patient services and Brosnan Construction was contracted to complete a scope of work that included the refurbishment and upgrade of the bathroom facilities in the birthing suites, reconfigurations to the public and family areas, construction of additional ensuites and external improvements to provide a covered ambulance bay.

The project involved working in a live hospital environment with access permitted to small sections of the ward at any given time.

It was critical that the hospital could continue to provide the vital community services with minimal disruption. Brosnan was instrumental in reviewing the methodology and in conjunction with the project team came up with a number of far less disruptive solutions.

Furthermore, public safety had to be strictly controlled and monitored at all times. A full height, clean wall hoarding system was used to confine the workers within the site and to maintain a privacy screen for the sensitive areas of the ward. The hoarding was further modified to assist with acoustic and dust controls.

Brosnan’s site team coordinated daily with the ward managers to communicate and plan for specific disruptive activities, service outages and transition during the staged handovers.

As with any existing building, challenges were not confined to the new works. Brosnan Construction provided as much early warning of the issues discovered to allow sufficient design time to avoid delays.

The project was a very challenging environment and, although the environment and the challenges were complex, the completion date was achieved.
