The client for this project, New Zealand Management Academies (NZMA,) are a tertiary education provider specialising in Hospitality, Cooking, Business Studies and, recently, Carpentry Training. The rapid growth of the hospitality sector meant they required larger premises with a custom fit-out to suit their unique educational requirements. This project entailed converting an existing 3500m2 industrial warehouse/office building into a leading-edge training facility complete with full size commercial kitchens, food preparation areas, an operating café, bar and classroom spaces, plus the necessary administration and support staff office space.
The key milestone for the project was a non-negotiable handover date of January 2014, driven by the client’s commitment to deliver courses to both local and international students commencing February 2014.
Following an Excellence Award at the 2014 Property Awards for stage 1, sustained roll-growth, and acquisition by Academic Colleges Group (ACG), Brosnan Construction was engaged early in the process to value engineer concepts for stage 2. Having been future proofed for expansion in stage 1 the scope included two additional commercial kitchens, completion of a mezzanine space for administration staff, installation of a passenger lift between floors and additional teaching spaces.
As the facility was to be fully operational whilst the fit out took place Brosnan Construction designed and installed a shrink-wrapped screen which separated the café, corridors, and teaching spaces in stage 1 from the worksite in stage 2 and allowed uninterrupted operation of the facility.
The facility is currently operating with an increased capacity with both day and evening classes operating all year round.
An indication of the successful outcome of this project is that it won an Excellence Award at the Property Awards 2014.
